Vincent Calabrese
Vincent Calabrese is one of the most significant figures in modern independent watchmaking. A self-taught Italian maestro, he is best known for his “philosophical” approach to horology—where the movement is not just a engine, but the aesthetic heart of the watch.
The Invention of
the Golden Bridge
The story of the Golden Bridge is a legendary tale of turning an insult into an icon.
In the late 1970s, Calabrese was asked to repair a high-end Breguet minute repeater that had been crushed by a car. When he quoted the repair cost, the owner told him to only fix the case, saying, “No one sees the movement anyway.”
Stung by this dismissive attitude toward the watchmaker’s art, Calabrese vowed to create a watch where the movement was the only thing to see.
The Design: He developed a linear “baguette” movement where all the components—barrel, gear train, and escapement—were arranged in a straight line, seemingly suspended in space.
The Launch: He presented the 45-component prototype at the 1977 Geneva International Inventors’ Show, winning a Gold Medal.
Corum Partnership: While several brands found the design too radical, René Bannwart of Corum recognized its genius. Corum acquired the patent and launched the Corum Golden Bridge in 1980, which remains one of the most recognizable luxury watches today.
Recent Win at GPHG (2023–2024)
Vincent Calabrese was recently honored at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) 2023, receiving the prestigious Special Jury Prize. He shared this award with fellow legendary watchmaker Svend Andersen. The prize was a tribute to their 1985 founding of the AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants).
Why it matters: The Special Jury Prize is one of the highest honors in the industry, recognizing individuals who have fundamentally shaped the world of watchmaking.
AHCI 40th Anniversary: As of 2025/2026, the AHCI is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The GPHG win served as a precursor to these celebrations, acknowledging how Calabrese’s vision for an “Academy” paved the way for modern independent stars like F.P. Journe and Kari Voutilainen.
