Designa Individual

Designa Individual Watches — universally shortened to DiW — is a German bespoke manufacture founded by two artists and collectors with an appetite for exotic composite materials. Clients send a donor timepiece, most often a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, and it returns re-cased, re-bezelled and re-dialled in forged carbon, its original calibre untouched. DiW is the most recognised name in high-end watch modification, and the most argued about.

What We Achieved

DiW is emphatic about what it is not: it does not manufacture watches, does not sell them, and holds no affiliation with the brands it works on. What it sells is a service performed on a watch the client already owns. Cases, bezels and dials are made in-house; the movement is not touched. Every finished commission arrives with a seven-year international warranty and an NFC-linked digital certificate recording its specification and ownership — an unusual degree of formality for a sector that has historically run on trust and Instagram DMs. Distribution runs through a small circle of retailers: Worldtimer in Hong Kong, Principe Privé in Japan, and Farfetch.

The Lightest Daytona Ever Built

Replacing steel with forged carbon across case, bezel and dial produced what DiW calls the lightest version of the watch ever made — the claim that turned a workshop into a category.

75+ Variants in One Family

The Daytona 40mm line alone spans more than seventy-five executions — Military, Speedster, GT, Avia, Rainbow, Motley — most released in editions of five or ten.

7-Year International Warranty

Every commission carries a seven-year warranty and an NFC certificate of ownership and specification — DiW’s answer to the fact that the original manufacturer’s cover is gone.

Origin

Neither founder came from traditional watchmaking. They came from materials — carbon fibre, quartz fibre, the weave and the grain — and began applying them to watches that were never designed to wear them. The house grew by hiring watch technicians before designers, on the logic that the hard part is not imagining a carbon Daytona but assembling one to a standard that survives daily wear. The name states the thesis plainly: designa individual — design, made individual.

Design Philosophy

Additive, not substitutive. The Rolex calibre 4130 chronograph movement, its 72-hour reserve and the fundamental architecture of the case all remain; the shell around them is rebuilt in forged carbon, CarboQuartz or titanium carbon, finished with DLC coatings, sapphire and gem-set bezels, and hand-stitched straps. Forged carbon is chosen as much for its grain as its strength — no two cases carry the same marbling, so each piece is visually singular before a single colour decision is made.

The Collection

Eleven families, almost none repeated — Daytona 40mm and 41mm, Submariner, Aquanaut, Carbon GMT, Carbon SD 43mm, Milgauss, World Timer, Voidline AP, The Black Grail Project and Novelties. Highlights include the Carbon Daytona (reported at US$43,990 at launch), the five-piece Carbon Emerald in carbon and 18k yellow gold, and the ten-piece Paul Newman Black DLC. Football is a recurring thread, with commissions built for Kakha Kaladze and Leandro Paredes.

Before you buy: modification voids the original manufacturer’s warranty and Rolex will not service a modified watch. Aftermarket pieces follow their own resale curve — ask for before-and-after documentation of the donor watch and full disclosure of which original components were replaced.

DiW asks a question the industry has spent a century avoiding: whether the object you paid for is yours to change. The carbon answers before the price does. — Editorial, Maison Indépendante
